Joan Carol Mottern Byrd, 75, of Athens, died Friday, June 15, 2012, at her residence. A native and resident of Elizabethton for most of her life, and a resident of McMinn County for the past three years, she was a daughter of the late Justin and Catherine Gentry Mottern. She was of the Protestant faith and was employed as a registered nurse and taught practical nursing at Marshall T. Nave Technical School. She was a volunteer for the Mobile Blood Drive and a longtime member of the BPW Club. Survivors include her husband, Billy Joe Byrd; two sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. David and Dr. Jenny Byrd of Athens, and Bill and Kay Byrd of Elizabethton; three grandchildren, Todd Marion, Katie Byrd and Will Byrd; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were 3 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Laycock-Hobbs Funeral Home with the Rev. Carlos Peterson officiating. Burial was 1:30 p.m. Monday at Happy Valley Memorial Park in Elizabethton.
