Birth: Mar. 15, 1905
Stoddard County
Missouri, USA
Death: Dec. 4, 1933
New Madrid County
Missouri, USA

It was Christmas Eve, 1933, 27 year-old Arthur Cashion was working at the A. F. Stanley filling station in New Madrid County, Missouri. He was covering a shift for Stanley's son, who was away on a holiday visit. Two men, Dave Eddy (alias Eddie Gayman), 43 and Roy Hamilton, 26 stopped for gas. They waited in the station while Arthur serviced their car. Upon entering the station, they pulled a gun on him, who in turn, pulled a gun to resist the robbery. Gayman was wounded in the exchange of bullets. The two men, both ex-convicts, drove away, leaving Mr. Cashion lying dead in their wake. Arthur Cashion, husband and father of three children, was murdered in an armed robbery while trying to defend himself. His two assailants didn't manage to take one dollar in their botched plan. Instead, they took a young man's life and all possibility of his family every getting to see him again.

This homicide set the stage for what would become one of the most prolific murder trials and executions in the Missouri of all time. In 1934 - 1935, New Madrid County, Missouri made national news. The two accused, Roy Hamilton and David "Eddy" Gayman, plead guilty in what they believed would result in life sentences for both of them. They were wrong.

On January 20, 1934, less than a month of commiting their crime, Mr. Hamilton and Mr. Gayman stood in front of Circuit Judge John E. Duncar. He accepted both of their guilty pleas. In return, the Judge handed the pair of men death sentences. He ordered that they were to be "hung by the neck until, dead, dead, dead." The court room was shocked, but no one more than the two men who believed that their lives were going to be spared in exchange for their own admissions.

New Madrid County now had the responsibility of hosting and performing two executions.
