Graduated from high school in Weatherford, Texas. Graduated from Texas Tech with a degree in journalism. He was a journalist for many years, working on a variety of newspapers including the Fort Worth Star Telegram, Vernon News, and Graham News Photo.
He spent four years in the Army Air Corps in Colorado during World War II.
He graduated from the University of Colorado Medical School, did his residency in Dearborn, Michigan, moved to Throckmorton, Texas and built a clinic next to the hospital there. He then worked in Englewood, Colorado for several years. He returned to Texas and opened the Diamond Hill Clinic in 1962.
He married Gwendolyn Mae Rankin 25 July 1934. They had one adopted daughter. They divorced in the late 50s.
He married Lois (Spain) Ricks, 23 Nov, 1966.
