As a child he lived in Colville, WA, graduating from Colville H. S. in 1939. He worked construction and then joined the Coast Guard in 1942. He was stationed in Tillamook, OR where he met Gladys. He was also stationed in Alaska and the South Pacific. In 1945 they moved to a farm in Birkenfeld, OR. They moved to another Birkenfeld farm in 1959. To supplement farm income, he was a truck driver, a construction worker, a logger, a chip pile machine operator at the Wauna paper mill.
