John was born at Ammon's Landing near Alton, Indiana in 1860. He was the oldest son of Nancy Christina Ann and George Washington Ammon. He was a teacher and businessman prior to coming to Rock Co., Nebraska, and filing on a homestead and tree claim on June 6, 1884. This was located about 20 miles south of Newport, NE, north of Long Lake which was later named Smith Lake. John resided here for the rest of his life. On Nov 14, 1889, he married Ida Estella Sybrant at Perch, Rock Co., NE. The were the parents of 4 children: Ben Edwards (Aug 29, 1890), Harold Gilbert "Harry" (Feb 15, 1892), Nancy Lucretia, and a twin brother who did not survive (Oct 23, 1902). At this time (2012), the Ammon Homestead is still being operated, and lived on, by his Ammon descendants.
