Carolyn was born at her parents home near Oldham. She attended school in Oldham, graduating from high school in 1939. She worked as an apprentice at Lund Pharmacy for several years and later owned and operated the Oldham Cafe with her father. She married Gene Gruenhagen on June 16, 1944 and they farmed in the Oldham and Wentworth areas before moving to a farm south of DeSmet where they farmed until 1977. They moved to DeSmet and managed the Kingsbury County Club and later owned the No Name Inn. They retired in 1989.
Gene and Carolyn had 2 sons and 1 daughter still living. One daughter, Debra, died in infancy.
Funeral services were held at the American Lutheran Church at DeSmet.
