Benjamin Freeman married Rebecca Ann Ransom in Georgia, in 1848. They came to Craighead (then part of Poinsett) county in 1852, before the town of Jonesboro was laid out, and settled on the old Greensboro Road, where he kept a post office called "Loch Bee". Ben Freeman was one of the first school teachers in the county. He taught a subscription school in the woods near where Church and Matthews streets intersect in present-day Jonesboro. He also served as Justice of the Peace for Poinsett county.
