Charles Braun: Manager, Traveler, Volunteer

Charles C. Braun, 86, started from humble beginnings. He grew up in Newport and his formal education consisted of eight years at St. Stephen Elementary School. His first job was as an errand boy for the E & J Swigart Co. in Cincinnati.
Through hard work, however, Mr. Braun would become vice president and general manager of the company, which sells precious tools and jewelry and watch parts. He also become involved in charity work for his old community.
Mr. Braun died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North in Covington after an extended illness.
Virginia Wasser Braun, Mr. Braun's wife for the past 27 years, said her husband began working for the Swigart Co. while still a teen-ager.
"He was always kidding that even after 52 years with the company, he was still trying to make up his mind if he liked working there," Mrs. Braun said. "He started as an errand boy and eventually held about every job in the company.
"When he retired about 20 years ago, he was company vice president and general manager," Mrs. Braun said.
She said her husband progressed through the company ranks by always being willing to take on new responsibilities and by going back to night school in Cincinnati.
For about 27 of his years at Swigart, Mr. Braun worked as a salesman, which kept took him all over the country. He continued that love of travel after retirement.
"He took me to Hawaii, Rome, Switzerland, Canada - you name it and we went there," Mrs. Braun said. "He liked people and made friends easily."
Mr. Braun had lived in Ft. Thomas for more than 35 years. His first wife, Hilda, died 28 years ago and their only child, Thomas Braun, died in October 1989.
About five years ago, Mr. Braun and his wife heard about the work Sister Ruth Marie was doing at Corpus Christi Church in Newport - helping gather food, clothes and furniture for needy families.
"She'd give us a call, telling us someone had lost their stuff in a fire or something," Mrs. Braun said. "We'd get the ages of the children for clothes or what else they needed and start making calls to friends.
"Soon we'd have several boxes of stuff and take them down to Sister Ruth Marie," Mrs. Braun said.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Braun is survived by five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Therese Church, Southgate. Prayers will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Ft. Thomas. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.
