Milam was born in Plainfield, Indiana to James and Sarah O'Brien. After his father finished managing the Indiana Boys Reform School, they returned to LaPorte, Indiana where Milan was raised. He married Martha Bennett on May 30, 1896 and attended college. He had a son born in 1897 and a daughter born in 1901. His children's names were Armand Bennett O'Brien and Florence L. O'Brien. He left behind his wife, two children and 4 grandsons. His funeral was held in Cutler Brother's chapel.
