Punky was a beautiful tri-colored Basset Hound (although her father uncharitably called her a "50-gallon drum with two inch legs"). She loved to play with Blackula, and was a companion to him. She managed to keep him from being set upon by the neighborhood tomcat, and this evolved into the following game: Blackula would slip out of a crack in the fence, track down the tomcat, then irritate, annoy and generally torment him until the tomcat started to chase him. Blackula would then slip through the fence, with the tomcat hot on his heels... where Punky was waiting. Blackula scooted behind her and she got to chase the cat. What a tag team. She had as much fun at this game as Blackula did.
Her other favorite game was "find the weenie." We would take a hot dog a cut it up into small portions and hide the pieces all over the house. We would then let her in from the back yard and say "Find the Weenie!" She went into overdrive (the only time I ever saw her move quickly), and found the all the hot dog pieces in very short order.
She was a loving dog, but not the greatest watch dog or guard dog. She would have slept through a burglary. She was happiest when she was with her family. When Punky was 13, she developed liver cancer. Before this devastating disease took its toll on her, we decided to put her to sleep; the vet came to the house (she hated going to the vet, and I wasn't going to stress her needlessly) and she slipped peacefully from us.
*Note: This picture is NOT Punky, but it does look strikingly like her, and captures her sweet personality.
