Marie Marciel Cabrinha
Passed peacefully into eternal life on February 20, 2007, at the age of 98, at her home in San Jose, in the presence of her loving children and caretaker.
Born July 19, 1908, in Makawao, Maui, the seventh of twelve children born to Jose and Estefania Marciel. Known to her family as "Girlie", she graduated in 1928 from Sacred Hearts Academy in Honolulu.
In 1934 married Anthony M. Cabrinha of Hilo, Hawaii. She worked as a court stenographer for Honolulu Police Court, and Tony as a police officer for the Honolulu P.D. In 1940 he was called into active duty as an officer in the U.S. Army, beginning a twenty-year career which took them to California, Japan, New York, and Germany. December 7, 1941, she and her two young daughters witnessed the attack on Pearl Harbor from the family home on St. Louis Heights in Honolulu. The family spent the war years in San Jose and Hawaii. From 1947 to 1949 served as a stenographer for the defense team at the Japanese War Crimes Trials in Yokohama. In 1957 moved to San Jose, and worked as a legal secretary. She was a charter member of the Women's Club at Deep Cliff Golf Course, and an avid 49er's fan. With the arrival of grandchildren, she became fondly known as "Tutu".
Preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, sons-in-law Anthony Pahia and Jerry Marsh, grandson Neal Pahia, and eleven brothers and sisters. Survived by children Stephanie Pahia of Kailua, Hawaii, Carole Marsh of Saratoga, Neal (Teresa) Cabrinha of Saratoga, and Sheila (Larry) Chestnutt of San Jose, grandchildren Angelina (Robert) Cravalho, Antoinette Pahia, John Pahia, Veronica Pahia, Jill (Douglas) Colley, Wendy Calhoun, Mark (Idona) Cabrinha, Anne Cabrinha, and Scott Gilbert, and eleven great grandchildren. Also survived by Elaine Pahia, widow of Neal Pahia.
The family wishes to acknowledge the devoted and compassionate care rendered by Alice Quai Hoi to our Tutu these past three years.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated to honor Marie's life on Saturday, March 3, at 11:00 a.m. at Church of the Ascension, 12033 Miller Avenue, Saratoga, followed by a reception in the parish hall. Private interment at Madronia Cemetery, Saratoga.
