Leola Elaine Barner, age 78, of Post Falls, passed away Friday, December 19, 2003 at Kootenai Medical Center in Coeur d'Alene from esophageal cancer. She was born June 25, 1925 in Potlatch, Idaho to Durell and Mary (Bysegger) Nirk. She graduated from Potlatch High School in 1944. She married Beuford "Bill" Brandt in February of 1944 and divorced in 1967. She married Melvin Barner on March 2, 1969 and then moved to Post Falls in September of that year. She fletched arrows for her brother at Nirk Archery in Potlatch and also out of her house.
Leola loved to bowl, and was the secretary of her bowling league for 18 years. She also enjoyed crocheting, cross-stitch, and gardening and flowers. She spent her weekends on the family float house on Lake Coeur d'Alene.
Survivors include her husband of 34 years Melvin, two daughters, one son, two step-sons and a step daughter-in-law, one step daughter and step son-in-law, one brother and two sister-in-laws, one sister, 4 grandchildren, 8 step grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, 5 step great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Leola was preceded in death by her parents, a sister Cleora Strong and 3 brothers Gerald, Glen, and Larry Nirk.
Visitation will be held on Friday, December 26, 2003 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM followed by a funeral service at 1:00 PM, both at Yates Funeral Home, Coeur d'Alene Chapel. A second funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 27, 2003 at 11:30 AM at the Freeze Church in Potlatch followed by burial at the Freeze Cemetery. Yates Funeral Home, Coeur d'Alene Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
