Willis Barnes was listed in census records as being born in Vermont. His parents were Henry E. and Caroline Forbes Barnes.
Apparently, he was a Civil War veteran as he applied for and received his soldier's pension starting in 1871. On September 13, 1876 he married Sarepta Ellen Brockman, the daughter of a farmer and nurseryman in Blairstown, Benton County, Iowa.
They were living in Blairstown, Iowa in the 1880 census, and his occupation was listed as Express Agent, while Sarepta was listed as being a housewife. They lost their first four children as infants and young children.
In 1900, the Barnes family was living in Storm Lake, Iowa.
After Willis died in 1904, Sarepta applied for his widow's pension in April of that year. She was listed as living in LeMars, Iowa in 1911 by her brother, Dr. David Brockman.
They have another child named Marguerite Barnes born about May 1891, d. unknown, who is not listed below with her siblings.
