Rufus was born to Chesley Leake Brockman and Rizpah Lucore Brockman as their first child. Rufus' middle name of Mason came from his father's youngest brother, who died when he was only 12 years old in 1853.
When Rufus was 6 years old, his father enlisted in the Iowa Infantry, Union Army. He suffered a wound to his arm, a sun stroke, and was taken prisoner, being held at the infamous Andersonville War Prison. He was released and discharged in July 1865, returning home when Rufus was 10 years old.
Rufus had 9 brothers and sisters: Chesley Newton Brockman, Mary Alice Brockman Arneson, Charles Edwin Brockman, Mahala Ella Brockman White, Sarah A. Brockman, Ida T. Brockman, William Sherman Brockman, James Albert Brockman, and Claude Brockman.
Rufus married Laura May Wilcox (b. October 27, 1861 in Petersburg, Menard County, Illinois). He died in 1893 at the age of 38. Laura died on June 20, 1920 in Vallejo, Solano County, California at the age of 58. They had 2 known children:
