Marcella's parents, John and Anna Appelhans were married on October 7, 1919, after John had served in the Army during World War I. They were living with John's family in Spearville, Ford County, Kansas in 1920 when John was working in a tire shop.
In 1930 and 1940, when they were raising their family of one daughter, Marcella, and 3 sons, John was working for Standard Oil Co. Anna's widowed mother, Katherine, was also living with the family for a time.
In 1940, when Marcella was 18 and working as a sales girl in a variety store, the family was living in LaCrosse, Rush County, Kansas. Unfortunately, Marcella died 5 years later at age 23.
