Louis' parents, John and Anna Appelhans were married on October 7, 1919, after John had served in the Army during World War I. They were living with John's family in Spearville, Ford County, Kansas in 1920 when John was working in a tire shop.
In 1930 and 1940, when they were raising their family of one daughter and 3 sons, John was working for Standard Oil Co. Anna's widowed mother, Katherine, was also living with the family for a time.
In 1945, when Louis was 22, his sister, Marcella, died. Louis' parents celebrated their 50th anniversary in 1969.
