Fred was the grandson of Jacob and Elizabeth Alsdorf from Summerfield, St. Clair, Illinois. Jacob was a shoemaker that immigrated from Germany in 1855.

Fred's father, Louis Alsdorf, was born c. 1856 in Missouri and was living in in Illinois in 1860, 1870 and 1880. On November 15, 1883, Louis married Elizabeth Marie Pletz in Woollum, Gasconade County, MO. Fred was born the following year in Topeka, Kansas.

Louis supported the family by being a laborer at an iron foundry and working as a boilermaker for the railroad. Elizabeth died on March 17, 1925 and Louis died on January 7, 1939.

Fred had two brothers and one sister: Jacob Arnold Alsdorf (1886 - 1960), Edward Henry Alsdorf (1889 - 1973) and Kathrine Alsdorf Zarse (1890 - 1972)

Fred started working for the railroad in Topeka in 1900, when he was 16 years old. In 1902 he began his apprenticeship as boilermaker for the railroad, repairing the steam locomotives. He married Katherine Dorothy Marks on April 29, 1907.

Fred and Katie had their first daughter in Kansas, and then moved to Denison, Texas, so that Fred could work in the railroad shops there as a boiler maker. While living in Denison they had 6 more children, one of whom died as a young child from whooping cough in 1912.

The family moved to Ottumwa, Iowa about 1925, and Fred worked for the railroad there until he retired in 1950. In the 1930s Fred was written up and praised for his honesty in the Ottumwa newspaper for finding a lost wallet on the ground that contained $1880 in it, and making sure that it was returned to the local farmer who had lost it.

Fred and Katie moved to Phoenix, Arizona in 1950 to join their daughter, Izetta, for their retirement years. They celebrated their 50th Anniversary in 1957. At the time of his death in 1977, Fred was survived by 6 children, 11 grandchildren and several great grandchildren.

The one son of Fred and Katie that is not listed below is Frederick Marks Alsdorf (1912-1982).
