Ruth was born to Fred and Katie Alsdorf in Kansas, but moved with her parents to Denison, Texas as an infant when her father went to work as a boilermaker for the railroad. When Ruth was in her last years of high school, the family moved to Ottumwa, Iowa. She graduated from Ottumwa High School in 1925.
Ruth worked as a telephone operator and was a supervisor for Northwestern Bell for 33 years. She was an accomplished pianist in her younger years. She was also known in the family for her beautiful crochet work.
Ruth moved to Arizona in the late 1950s, as her parents moved there after their retirement. She worked for the Biltmore Hotel group as a phone operator and desk clerk, spending her winters at the Biltmore in Phoenix, Arizona and her summers at the hotel in Jackson Hole, Wyoming before retiring. She died from lung cancer in 1987.
