David Camp, son of Benjamin Camp (1798- 1870) and Magdalena Mary Hinkel (1801-1858). One of Mount Carmel's early settlers and builders and an influential and active citizen, he began his living as a carpenter with his father, later becoming a merchant and moving to Centralia and then to Mt. Carmel in 1872. He began a shovel factory and lumber business and then again to the general store where he became very successful. Known for his great marksman skill in hunting, he restocked the area around Mt. Carmel with game and supplied many a poor table with meat. Responsible for building solid homes in the building boom of Mt. Carmel and for that effort a section called Camptown was named after him. Organizer of the Mt. Carmel Iron Works, and the Mt. Carmel Banking Co.(Union National ) and the Anthracite Fire Co. Served on the Mt. Carmel Council, he was active in the welfare of the poor , and entered into the political arena in various capacities. Lived a full and active life till a fall in 1913 began his decline in health and his death in 1915. Married in 1852, first to Lavina Persing (1835-1858) son's, Edward A. (1855-1946), and Robert E. (1857-1937). Married 2nd. in 1861 to Lavina's sister, Phebe Persing (1838-1918). Children: 1. Ida F. (1862-1932) married Robert Davis. 2. Tillie Jane (1864-1865). 3. Joseph C. (1866-1943) married to Elizabeth Blendall, they moved to the Detroit, MI area.. 4. Mary (1869-1870) 5. Lacy (1871-1879) 6. Stella (1874-1943) she married to John H. Griffiths 7. Abraham L. (1876-1879) . 8. George W. (1876-1964) married 1st to Sarah C. Williams, 2nd Virginia Ryan. 9. May (1877-1976) married to the Rev. Harry N. Foulk. 10. Carrie Bessie (1880-1970) married James L. Manney. 11. Garfield S. (1884-1965) married to Stella M. Haas..

In memory of my GreatGrandfather, John Stine's, best friend and the father-in-law of my Great Aunt Elizabeth Stine who married his son Robert. To a life well-lived and full of charity. Camptown is still there in Mt. Carmel. You are remembered. ~ Hettie
