Justin P. Kennedy, 70, of Mystic, died late Saturday evening, (December 11, 2004) at Westerly Hospital, Westerly, RI.
He was born on July 24, 1934 in Hartford, the son of Maurice and Margaret O'Brien Kennedy. He grew up in Hartford, graduating from Weaver High School where he played football for their team, the Weaver Beavers. After high school he went off to become a Trapist Monk, spending three months there, adopting the name; Brother Kanise but soon he decided that was not the course his life should follow. He enlisted in the Navy, loving the work he was doing and serving faithfully from 1953 to his retirement as Master Chief Hull Technician in 1973. While in the Navy, he met his love; Rosemary Brown. They were wed in Lakewood, CA on June 5, 1965. During his Naval career, Master Chief Kennedy served on many surface vessels, among them the USS Bainbridge upon which he sailed around the world twice. His skills ranged from Chief Shipfitter, Nuclear Propulsion Plant Operator on to Sr. Chief Damage Control Aux Division Officer. After his retirement from the Navy he went to work for General Dynamics Electric Boat and the Naval Submarine Base where his work included job assignments such as Ship Superintendent; coordinating construction of hull and exterior areas of the Trident Class Submarines and also worked as a Test Operating Engineer; supervising all phases of the installation and testing of the nuclear propulsion systems. His interests outside of his work ranged from reading the newspaper and intently following the stock market reports to kayaking and even trying his hand at sculpting. He was also an enthusiastic Red Sox fan. He will long be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor. In addition to his wife of 35 years, he is survived by two daughters, Mariam Kennedy of Mystic and Trish Porter and her husband Michael of Noank; four brothers, Maurice ``Moe'' Kennedy of Lady Lakes, FL, Richard Kennedy of Bloomfield, Philip Kennedy and Jerome Kennedy both of West Hartford; three sisters, Peggy Samolyk of Windsor, Eleanore DeMaio of Boston and Lucille O'Connell of Unionville. Justin and Rosemary also have two grandchildren, Justin and Sean Porter. He was predeceased by two brothers; Ralph and John Kennedy and a sister, Christine Kennedy. The Funeral will be held from Mystic Funeral Home, Route 1 Mystic, on Thursday, December 16 at 10:15 a.m. to a Funeral Mass at St. Mary Mother of the Redeemer Church, Groton at 11 a.m. Military Honors will follow the service there. Relatives and friends may also call at the funeral home on Wednesday evening from 5-7 p.m. A Naval Burial at Sea will take place at a later date. The family requests, in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his name to the National Kidney Foundation of CT, Inc., 2139 Silas Deane Highway, Rocky Hill, CT 06067.
