Quang Tri, Vietnam
RECIPIENT OF THE PURPLE HEART
Army - CPL - E4
Albion Joe Bergantzel began his tour of duty on June 26, 1970; he would be killed in action 7 months later, in Quang Tri, South Vietnam.
His cause of death is listed as 'Ground casualty - artillery, rocket or mortar'. His body is listed as recovered, but no further details are known at this time - I would appreciate any comment or information from other members of this site.
Cpl Bergantzel is listed as from the state of Iowa; his parents are listed as a Mr. and Mrs. Jess Bergantzel of that area. I am presently trying to verify other information, as well as find a photograph of this hero.
Mr. Bergantzel is also remembered on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall, Panel 04W, Line 12.
This page and information is being placed online, on what would have been Mr. Bergantzel's 62nd birthday.
"These heroes are dead. They died for liberty - they died for us. They are at rest. They may or may not sleep in the land they made free, under the flag they rendered stainless, under the solemn pines, the sad hemlocks, the tearful willows, and the embracing vines. They sleep beneath the shadows of the clouds, careless alike of sunshine or of storm, each in the windowless Place of Rest. Earth may run red with other wars - they are at peace. In the midst of battle, in the roar of conflict, they found the serenity of death. I have one sentiment for soldiers living and dead: cheers for the living; tears for the dead." ~Robert G. Ingersoll
