The eldest born son to a Steer Farmer; Patrick was born on Hazel Hill, Ballyhaunis, Mayo, Ireland. One of six children to Francis and Mary (nee Tighe) Clarke, he was raised in a strong Irish Catholic Family.

Patrick set sail to the United States on May 6, 1914 on the Arabic, meeting family (Annie Fitzmaurice) in Boston Massachusetts. He worked there as a machinist at George E Keith Walk-Over Shoes until joining the Navy.

Patrick served in the Navy in WW1 as a Seaman 2nd Class. He lied about his age so that he could serve his new country.

After his service in the war, Patrick planted roots in Ashley Pennsylvania where there were other cousins; John and Michael Clarke to name a few. It is there where he met his wife Ellen Magdeline (Nellie) Nealon, the daughter of Michael and Mary (nee Clarke) Nealon. They were married on 19 June 1923. Living modestly, they raised 8 children at 59 Cook St in Ashley; Margaret, Francis Michael, Eleanor, Catherine, Patrick Joseph, Raymond, Mary and James.

Patrick worked as a coalminer until he injured his leg and then took several odd jobs working in the local schools.

He was hard working, loved to hunt with his sons and his beautiful dogs. He enjoyed woodworking and had a yard filled with flowers that was the pride of the neighborhood. He was well respected and very active in his community. And was beloved by his family.

Although he made the United States his home, he never forgot his homeland. His children often speak about how each year on St Patrick's Day, their father Patrick would dress in his green suit and bow tie and with tears in his eyes he would listen to Irish radio all day. Until the day he died, Patrick longed for the day he would once again return to his homeland of Ireland, but he never made it back.
