Born in Ireland (probably County Kerry) and came to the United States as a young boy during the Irish potato famine. Naturalized in Norwich, county of New London, Connecticut on March 18, 1868.
His family came to Nebraska from Connecticut around 1868. He was a farmer, a druggest and a businessman. He was one of the founders and original stock holders of the Dawson Bank.
Married Ellen Sullivan in 1872 at Dawson, Nebraska. Father of Mary Ellen (Mame) Ryan O'Grady, Catherine (Kate) Ryan, Thomas Michael Ryan, Sr., and Beatrice Ryan Engles.
He was the son of Thomas Ryan and Mary Coleman Ryan. Brother to Ellen (Riley), Lawrence A, Bridget (Riley), Thomas J. and Martin C.

His tombstone is in the Ryan family plot. It has no name, simply the word "Father" and the dates.
