"Murray Cochran Funeral Thursday"
"Young Man, Invalid for 25 Years, Dies in Goshen Hospital"

Murray E. Cochran, 40, passed away Monday afternoon at the Goshen General Hospital where he had been receiving care for the past two weeks. The young man, paralyzed following a diving accident 25 years ago, lived in Constantine until three years ago. He was with his brother in Elkhart for three years, and three weeks ago went to Goshen to the home of his sister.
Despite his handicap, Murray continued his studies at Constantine High School with the aid of willing instructors who took his school work to his home. His interest in amateur radio work enabled him to become a "ham" radio operator and through this means of communication formed many acquaintances.
The son of Earl and Etah Miller Cochran, he was born in Calhoun county, Michigan, on June 28, 1823. He was a member of the North Side Church of the Nazarene in Elkhart.
Funeral Services are to be conducted at the Geisler Funeral Home this Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Rev. Gene Pool is to conduct the services and burial will be at Poe's Cemetery, Cass county.
He is survived by his father, Earl Cochran, two sisters, Mrs. Walter Stahl and Mrs. John Laird, all of Goshen; and a brother, Virgil Cochran, of Elkhart.

At the age of 14 Murray was paralyzed from the neck down in a diving accident at a place called the Porter swimming hole on the St. Joseph River just off River Street. His hobby was amateur "ham" radio, where his call number was KN8DJO (while he lived in Constantine, MI) and W9CPL at the end of his life in Elkhart and Goshen, Elkhart County, IN. Members of the Michiana Amateur Radio Club of South Bend, IN, took care of Murray's radio equipment for many years, which was very specialized due to his paralysis. Murray was a bright and talented young man, graduating from Constantine High School in 1943 and earning college credits through correspondence courses after that. At the age of 33 his goal was to become a legal researcher and set himself up as a specialist in real estate and property in the Kalamazoo area. Prior to that time, he operated dances and an orchestra, announced horse and auto races, was a bookkeeper in a radio shop, and was a specialty advertising salesman. After his accident Murray had many operations (14 by the time he was 33). Probably the most difficult event in the life of this courageous young man was the death in 1958 of his mother, Etah (Miller) Cochran Hanley, who was his devoted and loving caregiver. His death September 23, 1963, occurred just two days before the death of his grandmother, Carrie M. (Clendenin) Miller.
