Ella James, daughter of Catherine (McFaren) James Girt and Edward James, moved with her mother from Indiana to Calvin Township, Cass County, Michigan, as a young child when her widowed mother married a prosperous, childless and widowed farmer, James Girt, who had recently lost his wife, Esther, in 1865. By 1872, James Girt himself had died, and so began many years of the farm being owned by the widowed Catherine Girt. Eventually Ella married another resident of Calvin Township, Dix H. Beeson, and moved with him to Three Oaks, Michigan, where Mr. Beeson owned and operated a drug store on the main street of Three Oaks for many years. Ella and Dix had three children, Paul, Lois and Helen. They lived in the first house north of the railroad tracks, on the west side of the main street of town. The 1930 US Census for Three Oaks, MI, identifies the address as 205 Elm Street.
