William Rosencrans Clendenin, son of Ruth Catherine (Greenman) and James C. Clendenin, married Luella Jackson, daughter of Susan (Eberhard)Smith and Andrew W. Jackson, December 31, 1885, in Three Rivers, MI. The couple divorced and then remarried March 26, 1998, in St. Joseph Co., MI, and
then eventually divorced a second time. They had two daughters, Wilma M. (Clendenin)Kroll and Willo M. (Clendenin) Schick.
William Rosencranz Clendenin was known as Crance (or Cranz). His middle name may come from the Union General William S. Rosecrans, who defeated the Confederate General Sterling Price in the Battle of Iuka, fought in northern Mississippi, September 19, 1862, a year before William was born.
In Kenneth Poe's autobiographical account, "Memories of Jones, Michigan, in the 1920's and 1930's" (1962), he recalls the following about "Crance" Clendenin:
"The saw mill was located one hundred yards south of the cooperative and the mill was big business at that time. . .If you could see the mill now as it was then you would see Crance Clendenning skidding logs with horses to the west door of the mill and from there Otis Rifenberg would roll them on a four wheeled cart which ran on a track to the saw carriage."
William's death certificate describes his occupation as, "carpenter/self employed".
