Birth: Apr. 12, 1816
New York, USA
Death: Mar. 20, 1857
Cass County
Michigan, USA

Mariah Owen, daughter of Ruth(Gee) and Morgan Owen, married Stephen Colby, son of Sarah "Sally" (Howe) and Nicholas Colby, Jr., March 30, 1833, in the Town of Greece, Monroe County, New York (Owen/Colby Bible Record).

The Owen Bible came to Mariah from the estate of her parents, Ruth and Morgan Owen. This impressive book, published in 1812, contained the records of three generations of Owens. It then became known as the Colby and Owen Bible, as members of the Stephen Colby/Mariah Owen line entered their family records. The Bible went to California with some of the descendants of their son, Calvin Colby, where it remains. Photocopies of its pages were obtained by Robert E. Colby of Elkhart, IN, a great-grandson of Calvin and Rebekah Colby. The following list of the birth dates of the children of Mariah (Owen) and Stephen Colby is excerpted from the Colby and Owen Bible:

P. 679 - Births

James Colby was born February 8th, 1837 in Cass County, Michigan
Ira O. Colby was born December 7th, 1838 in Cass County, Michigan
Mary Ann Colby was born April 13th, 1841 in Cass County, Michigan
Calvin Colby was born April 24, 1845 in Cass County, Michigan

Mariah's parents, Ruth Gee(1777-1752) and Morgan Owen (1776- 1751), moved West with their children from Monroe County, New York, to settle with their friends, the Frederick Miller family. They settled in York Township, Elkhart County, Indiana, on State Line Road just south and a little east of Mottville, Michigan. Next to them settled their daughter, Anna "Nancy" Owen (1808-1835), and her husband, Samuel S. Miller (abt.1802-1839), with their son, Aaron, and, soon after their arrival, a daughter, Mary Ann. At their death, Ruth and Morgan's surviving sons all received a parcel of land from their estate, but Mariah, the only surviving daughter, seemed to have inherited the household goods, including the Owen Family Bible.

The graves of Ruth and Morgan Owen and Nancy and Samuel Miller have never been found. They could have been buried almost anywhere without stones, including Five Points Cemetery in the oldest part of the cemetery, which originally was the family cemetery of John Worst and his wife, Sarah T. (Miller) Holmes Worst, the sister of Samuel S. Miller.
