Iver Harvey Lawson was born in Clinton, Massachusetts to the union of John Robert Lawson and Almaretta Isabelle (Harvey) Lawson. He had an older sister, Helen Ann (Lawson) Berndt.

After the untimely death of his father, his mother remarried William H Porter, and had 10 more children.

Iver had four daughters with his first wife, Gladys (Brigham) Lawson, and is buried next to his second wife, Camille Mildred (Arico) Langley Lawson. Camille had a son from a previous marriage.
