Mrs. B.H. Berning
Calmly and peacefully Mrs. Bernard H. Berning left her beloved family and many friends to enter her eternal reward Saturday at 11:25 P.M.
Mrs. Berning had been failing in health from sinus trouble since November and grew weaker regardless of everything being done to give her comfort and relief. In her final illness she went to bed Tuesday of last week. Mr. Berning called the doctor from Leoti who thought her case was not serious but the change seemed to come rapidly Saturday noon and Rev. Father Cyprian was brought to administer the last Sacraments and consolation to the fast declining and loved mother who was attended by her dearly beloved husband, sons and daughters, all being present with the exception of Sister Mary Andrew who came from St. Francis Hospital, at Carlsbad, New Mexico, Monday Morning, and Johanna from Wichita arriving and hour after her mother had passed away.
Mrs. Bernard H. Berning was born in Bavaria, Germany, July 25, 1866 and came to American in 1869. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Adam Pregler settled in Warren County, St. Mary's Iowa, and in 1870 moved to Herndon, Rawlins County, Kansas, where she was united in marriage to Bernard Berning, May 15, 1888, making Herndon their first home. Two years later they moved to a farm near Beloit, Kansas where they lived ten years. The next three years they lived in Westphalia. In 1903 they moved to Kinsley, Kansas where they farmed fourteen years, then settled in Marienthal where successful farming again enabled them to build themselves a beautiful home.
Funeral services were held in St. Mary's Church at 9 o'clock Tuesday morning with High Mass celebrated by Reverend Father Cyprian O.M.C. who laid the remains to rest in St.Mary's cemetery. A very large number attended the funeral.
Mrs. Berning leaves to mourn, her husband, four sons Joseph, Ludwig, Anthony, and Nicholas, all residents of Marienthal and seven daughters, Mary, Mrs Casper Bieker; Rosaila, Mrs. Peter Linenberger; Elizabeth, Mrs. Frank Kohl; Frances, Mrs. George Kessler; Clara; Sr. Mary Andrew (Margaret); and Johanna, all residents of Marienthal with the exception of Sister Mary Andrew who is nursing in St. Francis Hospital, Carlsbad, New Mexico.
