Helena was born in Eguisheim, Alsace, France (at time of immigration was part of Germany) to Sebastian and Catherine (Scharer) Bendele who immigrated to Immaculate Conception parish of Ottoville, Ohio. Helena and husband, Jacob migrated to the German parish of St. Mary's of Hannah in Grand Traverse Co., Michigan. After the death of her husband, Helena was living with her daughter, Mary Kreiser. She was a widow for 20 years, with her husband buried at the opposite end of St. Mary's cemetery from her gravesite.
Enjoyed telling her grandchildren bible stories and fairy tales.
