THE OKLAHOMAN (Oklahoma City, OK)
4/20/1923 In Memoriam (Friday)
W.S. Fleming, 70 years old, 2016 W. 14th street, died Thursday morning. Funeral services were held at Church of Christ, 10th & Francis, Thursday afternoon. The body will be sent to Hobart for burial.
William Simpson Fleming was born Jan 12, 1853, to Elkany Delaney Rush Fleming and Dorcas Vickery Fleming, in Wayne County, Kentucky. He was youngest of ten children born to Elkany and Dorcas, with three older brothers and six older sisters.
William married Sarah Frances Dunnegan and together they had nine children. In 1892, after outgrowing their small Kentucky farm, the family moved to Texas. Then in 1900 the Kiowa strip in Indian Territory (later, Oklahoma) was opened up for settlement, and William filed on a claim near Hobart. After making several trips to the land to haul their machinery, the farm was ready for its new family, and William made one last trip back to bring Sarah and the children.
Some years after Sarah's death in 1911, William moved to Norman, OK, where some of his grown children had made their homes. After his death in 1923, his family took his body back to Hobart to be buried in the Hobart Rose Cemetery alongside his bride.
