She became one of the first Chinese women to become a physician in the US. After witnessing the sad fate of her sister Rose, she ran away with the help of Donaldina Cameron and the Presbyterian Mission in San Francisco, with the goal of becoming educated and not being treated poorly as had her sister Rose. She married late in life, to a Chinese Diplomat, Y.W. Chan, and they had a happy life together. She was affectionately called Nana by her husband's grandchildren, and respected by all.
