Dau. of Bryan Grant (Sgt, AL 43d, KIA, Petersburg, VA) & Sarah Lockhart Ringgold of Marengo Co., AL. Orphaned by the age of 10, she was raised by her aunt Caroline Grant Davis, whom she accompanied in following her daughter Mary Elizabeth Huggins to Oktibbeha Co. While toiling in the Huggins' fields picking cotton, her beauty struck Joseph Gray as he walked by. Their children: Mary Imogene (Mamie) Gray Dismukes, Bryan Ringgold Gray, Estelle Lockhart Gray Sloan, Herbert Clyde Gray. Saw to it her children received the education she was denied: sent Mamie to high school in Kansas City (at Estelle's half-brother Clyde Burns' home) & had the family move from Noxubee Co. farm to Starkville to enable her other children to attend high school. She had a hard life, but was beloved for her kindness to family and those in need in her community.
