Deceased Name: West Springfield man drowned during swim in decorative pond
Accidental drowning was the cause of death of a 42-year-old West Springfield man pulled from a pond Saturday at the Sheraton Springfield West Hotel on Route 5, police said yesterday.
Joseph Demers, last known address of 91 Hill St., was pronounced dead at 9:17 p.m. Saturday at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield.
Demers' body was pulled from the center of the pond, which is 50 by 100 feet wide, about 9 p.m. by a firefighter who descended into the water from an aerial ladder extended over the water.
Girard said Demers was found floating in 4 feet of water, and may have developed a cramp or gotten stuck in the mud after stripping to his shorts and going for a swim.
The pond is not used for swimming, but is part of the landscaping of the hotel grounds, police said.
Girard said that Demers' brother, Edward, was with the victim at the time of the drowning.
According to Girard, Edward Demers said his brother drank four beers prior to the accident, but was not drunk at the time.
Toxicology reports will not be completed for six to eight weeks.
Girard said police received a call reporting a possible drowning at 8:28 p.m. Fire officials said they were summoned a few minutes later to retrieve the body from the pond, which is about 150 feet from the hotel building.
