Donald Irving Ciliax, 84, of Huntsville, passed away Friday at his home. Mr. Ciliax was a native of Detroit, Michigan, and graduated high school there before joining the Navy. He graduated from Wayne University receiving his degree in Electronics Engineering.
Mr. Ciliax moved to Huntsville while employed with Chrysler Corporation, later taking employment with the Army Missile Command. He advanced from one of the Guidance and Control Directorate's branch chief to the new Missile Systems Software Center. Under his leadership, the center evolved into directorate status – the Battlefield Automation Management Directorate. He also directed a new facility to be designed and developed for software and hardware support of Battlefield Automation Systems. This new facility was renamed the Software Engineering Directorate (SED). He managed SED until he retired.
Mr. Ciliax was preceded in death by two children, David Ciliax and Patricia Ciliax; brother, Gordon Ciliax; and parents, Gertrude and Thomas Ciliax.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Gooch Ciliax; sons, Richard Ciliax (Cathy) and Rick Swaim; grandchildren, Heath Swaim (Candace), Kyle Swaim, Rachel Ciliax and Robyn Ciliax; great-granddaughter, Callie Swaim; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Barbara Ciliax, Mary Ruth and Wesley Mitchell, Neida Ivey and Annette Gooch and many nieces and nephews. He was a kind and caring person and will be greatly missed by family and friends.
Visitation will be from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m. Sunday at Laughlin Service Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow at the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Ernest Hill and Dr. Ron Madison officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Zion Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mount Zion Cemetery, c/o Rebecca Wall, 963 Jeff Road, Huntsville, AL 35806.
