I received the following transcription from Dorothy Kipper Lickteig, president of the Anderson County Historical Society, in September 2012.

W. E. McDowell was born Sept. 5, 1830 in West Virginia and died Apr. 19th. In 1870 he moved to Jackson Co., KS., and in 1871 moved to Cass Co., Missouri; where he lived till 1883, when he moved to Colony and has since resided. He was a member of the Baptist Church for fifty years, and was deacon at the time of his death. He leaves a widow, one sister in Virginia, 4 sons and four daughters, Mrs. J. E. Ellis of Cleveland, MO; Mrs. Elmer Curnutt of K. C., MO; Mrs. E. A. Miller and Delia McDowell of Long Creek, Oregon; A. T. & J. H. McDowell of Colony, C. E. McDowell of Newton, KS; and W.E. McDowell of Tingley, Iowa. All the children except the two in Oregon were with him at his last. The funeral was preached Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Baptist Church.
William briefly served during the Civil War. Mary Buchholz made following notes while visiting the West Virginia State archives.
