HQ, 5th Armored Division, G.O. No. 3 (1945)

In Germany from December 11th to the 22nd Private First Class John Louis Burghart took command of his squad after both the squad leader and the assistant squad leader had been wounded, and pressed the attack successfully over ground covered by enemy mortars and small arms fire and continued to direct the squad fire on the retreating enemy after being wounded by enemy shrapnel. On December 19th 1944 while his company was occupying an enemy village, Pfc. John Burghart observed and although under mortar fire directed supporting artillery to destroy enemy gun's. In later combat with utter disregard for his personal safety he exposed himself to enemy fire and made three trips over open ground, crawling and pushing supplies before him to bring rations to his squad. The gallant heroic actions of Pfc. John Louis Burghart are in accordance with the highest traditions of the military service of the United States and reflect credit upon himself. In recognition of his actions John Louis Burghart was promoted to staff sergeant.
