James Milo Nosler was born in Putnam County, Indiana in 1843. He served in the Civil War (Union Loyalist) and achieved rank of Lieutenant.

He was quite a documentarian regarding his own life experiences. James Milo Nosler kept a handwritten journal describing the hardships families face when moving west on the overland trail, as they all did. Link to a transcription of this journal is found: http://digitalcollections.lib.washington.edu/cdm/ref/collection/pioneerlife/id/988.

Tragically, daughter Flora May died of "consumption" at age 9 when they were traveling on the trail in New Mexico.

James Milo married Sarah Ann "Sadie"/"Sally" Snyder in 1843. They had 5 children:
- Flora May
- Charles Edgar
- Margaret "Maggie" Alva
- Ella Myrtle Caroline
and
- Hale Relson

He died in San Diego, CA, at only age 43 in a home for veterans.
