February 7, 1935

On account of a large tree not falling in the direction expected, John Cornelius Stienstra, of Council Hill, formerly of Galena, was fatally injured about three o'clock Thursday afternoon.

The young man and his employer, Charles Redfearn, were cutting wood on the Redfearn farm when the tree crashed on Mr. Stienstra, breaking his back and fracturing both his limbs, also inflicting internal injuries that caused his death within an hour or so later at the Hazel Green Hospital where he was rushed after the accident.

Mr. Stienstra was born in East Galena August 19, 1911 and grew to young manhood in this city, moving with his parents to the Harris farm in Council Hill that his father had purchased a few years ago. Surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Cornelius Stienstra, also three younger brothers, George, Nelson, and Ambrose, and the following uncles and aunts - Julius Stienstra, Galena; Daniel Stienstra, Minneapolis; Mrs. John Black, Crocker, MO; Mrs. Otto Rumer, St. Louis, Anna Stienstra, Moline, Ill; Edgar Deininger, Galena; William Deininger, Forest Park; and Bertha Deininger, Galena. The accident victim was a fine upright young man and a hard worker. He has many friends in this vicinity.
