Durango resident Steven Lee Baumgardner died suddenly Thursday, Sept. 5, 2013, in Durango. He was 50. The cause of death was heart failure and blood clots.

Mr. Baumgardner was born to Dick and Judy (Conway) Baumgardner on Oct. 27, 1962, in Durango. The family lived in Durango until he was 10, when they moved to Arizona and Denver before returning to La Plata County in 1979. Mr. Baumgardner graduated from Bayfield High School in 1981.

He worked in the natural-gas construction industry, but he loved farming and ranching. His family said he thoroughly enjoyed his summers helping his Grandpa Tom Conway and his time working as a ranch hand for Joe Hotter.

A back injury changed what he was physically able to do, so he went to Denver to retrain and became a webmaster and entrepreneur.

Mr. Baumgardner married his high school sweetheart, Beverly Martinez, and they shared 17 years together before the marriage ended in divorce.

"Steve loved reading and learning and enjoyed farming, baseball, football and history," according to his family. "He was intelligent, kind and considerate."

Mr. Baumgardner is survived by his parents, Dick and Judy Baumgardner, of Bayfield; sister, Karen Pierce, of Atlanta; brother, Andy Baumgardner, of Durango; grandmother, Ida Conway of Bayfield; and one nephew.

Mr. Baumgardner was an organ donor. A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. today, Sept. 7, 2013, at the church next to the Florida Cemetery on County Road 225, where burial will occur.
