Jessie Hamilton Dicken, daughter of Pittsburgh Lawyer J. Charles Dicken and his wife Mary Linton Chambers, was born March 17, 1864 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. On December 20, 1883 she married Sturley Cuthbert Armstrong. The couple had four children:
Mary Chambers Armstrong, married James Chruickshank Watt
Herbert William Armstrong married Marie Connor
Helen Hunt Armstrong, married William Lloyd Allen, later married Burton Howe
Arthur Dilworth Armstrong, married Edith Mae Locke
Sturley Armstrong, a well-known cashier at Washington National Bank, mysteriously disappeared on January 2, 1906, and was found dead a month later of an apparent suicide by bullet to the head near Roanoke, Virginia February 6, 1906.
About 1916 Jessie married Rev. Joseph Edgar Maxwell, a Doctor of Divinity. The couple was living in Atlantic City, NJ, but Dr. Maxwell died of a heart attack during a visit to Pittsburgh in 1917. Jessie died, April 14, 1951 at her residence in the Ruskin Apartments. She was survived by her two daughters, Mrs. James C. Watt of Pittsburgh, Mrs. Burton A. Howe of Greenwich, Conn., 7 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
