Rebecca "Becky" Davis Burris, died Monday April 10 in Asheville, NC after several years of failing health. She was 98.
Born Feb. 11, 1902, in Staunton, VA, she was the daughter of Sallie Chamberlayne and Thomas Walter Davis. In 1913 she moved with her family to Redlands where her father operated a print shop for many years.
During her more than 80 years in Redlands, she was very active in the community. After graduating from Redlands High School in 1921, she attended business school in Los Angeles. In 1925 she married H. Cleo Burris, who died in 1969.
A free-lance writer all her life, she was a reporter for the Redlands Daily Facts and then the "Redlands Page" of the San Bernardino Sun.
She was associate editor of the 1938 "Golden Jubilee" book, an extensive history of Redlands and many prominent Redlands citizens, published as part of the 50th anniversary Redlands' incorporation as a city. She was also assistant chairman of the hospitality committee for the city's Golden Jubilee celebration.
During World War II she served as a security guard at Norton Air Force Base and after that, she worked for many years as secretary to Louis P. Scherer, a local building contractor.
After she retired, she wrote a number of human interest columns for the Redlands Daily Facts.
Her community involvement included serving as publicist for the Redlands Bowl; volunteering as "pink lady" at Redlands Community Hospital and as a guide at the San Bernardino County Museum; delivering meals for Redlands Meals on Wheels for many years; being instrumental in developing the Joslyn Senior center in Redlands; and serving on the Salvation Army board of directors.
She was also a member of the Contemporary Club and
American Pen Women and was a 70-year member of the local Arrowhead Chapter of the Daughters if the American Revolution.
She moved to Asheville, NC in 1994.
Survivors include a son, Cleo Bradford Burris of Asheville, NC; a sister, Dorothy McGrew of Kailus-Kona, Hawaii; two grandsons and five great grandchildren. She was preceded by her husband in 1969 and their infant daughter Sally in 1928.
A memorial service will be held April 25, at 3 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church in Redlands. Burial will be private, at Hillside Memorial Park.
