Lafayette Talbert Averitt, second child of William B. and Martha Averitt, was born in Trimble County, Kentucky, November 24, 1853, and departed this life July 30, 1936, aged 82 years, 8 months, and 6 days.
At the early age of eight years he lost his mother and this sad experience had a very pronounced effect on the rest of his life. In early life he professed faith in Christ and joined the Poplar Ridge Baptist Church in Kentucky and during his life he was an earnest church worker, serving for a time as church clerk. Later he transferred his membership to the Greenwood Baptist Church and remained a member there for the rest of his life.
In December, 1884, he came to Indiana and was united in marriage to Mary Frances Law. To this union was born one son, Will F. Averitt. Mrs. Averitt died when Will was eleven years old and for four years Mr. Averitt nobly accepted the task of both father and mother.
On March 1, 1893, he was again married to Sallie Whitenack. To this union were born two children, Mary and Tom, who survive. Mrs. Averitt passed away April 16, 1926. Since that time, Mr. Averitt had lived with his son, Tom Averitt.
His whole life was a life of hardship for others. Because of these experiences he was very tender-hearted to the poor and needy. He was always a very proud man and was always glad to hear of the success of others.
He leaves to mourn their loss, three children, Will, and Tom Averitt, of Greenwood and Mrs. Mary Wolcott, who lives east of Southport, and nine grandchildren. He also leaves, one brother, Andrew Averitt, of Indianapolis, five half-brothers, Robert, of Winchester, Kentucky, Dr. Ben Averitt, of Havana, Cuba, James P., of Detroit, Richard G., of Plainfield, and Tom Averitt, of Indianapolis. He also leaves one half-sister, Mrs. Jane Woodall, of Myers, Kentucky, besides a host of nieces and nephews and friends who mourn his departure.
He is not gone, he is just a
