Bladen Ashby was born on Jun. 10, 1830 in Ladoga, Montgomery County, Indiana. He was the son of Silas Ashby and Nancy RADFORD Ashby. Bladen married Elizabeth Margaret FOSTER on Sept. 12, 1854 at the Foster home near Bainbridge, Indiana.
Bladen Ashby and his wife Elizabeth left Indiana in the spring of 1856. They spent several months raising a crop in Iowa, near relatives. Two or three weeks after the birth of their second daughter, they traveled by covered wagon to Missouri before continuing west to Kansas. Several families moved with them to Kansas including Bladen's brother Jim and his wife, Mary, who was the sister of Elizabeth.
Bladen and Elizabeth had ten children: Sarah "Hattie", Mariettie "Ettie" Clay, William "Frank", Nannie "Kate", Eva Jane, Alva Lincoln, Arthur James, Elizabeth "Sue", Orien Foster, & Gertrude "Octava"
(Bladen also had a great uncle named Bladen)
