Stephen William Banks died May 24 at his Los Banos home. He was 56.
Mr. Banks was born March 10, 1950 in Fullerton. He grew up in various parts of the state and settled in Visalia in 1963. He graduated from George McCann School, Mt. Whitney High School and the College of the Sequoias, where he majored in journalism.
After college, he started a career in radio and then moved to the Bay Area to be a freelance writer for the Western Fire Journal. After a brief stint managing a Greyhound bus terminal in Palm Springs, Mr. Banks moved to Los Banos to work for Butler Amusement where he was employed for the past 19 years.
He was a member of many organizations including the Showfolks of America, Pacific Coast Showmens Association, Showmen's League of America and the Oregon Trucking Association.
Throughout the changes in his career, Mr. Banks' love of writing continued through many and varied forms. He was a contributing writer for Carousel Magazine and had a very sharp wit and ability to write eloquently, loved ones said.
He will be missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his mother, Dorothy Banks of Visalia; sisters, Cathy Hallmark, Mary Ann King and Teresa Adams-Denner; three nieces, four nephews and one great niece.
