Susan Alice (Wood) Boyles was born on July 16, 1846 in Lincoln Co., North Carolina, the sixth of twelve known children in her family. Her parents were John Henry Wood (1810-1891) and Elizabeth Catherine "Katie" Bess (1818-1900).

Her father John was born in and near Lincolnton, Lincoln Co., NC. Her mother Katie was also born in Lincoln Co., probably in or near Lincolnton as well. Both of Susan's parents died in Lincolnton and are buried there in the Zion Methodist Cemetery with daughter Ida Belle (Wood) Harbister (1859-1882). The three of them share the same headstone

Susan married Marcus Wrightman Boyles (1842-1892) on Mar. 14, 1866 at the home of her parents in Lincoln Co., NC. At the time of their marriage Susan was 19, Marcus 23.

Marcus had fought for the Confederacy during in the Civil War. When the war ended he was a prisoner in Camp Lookout in Maryland. Upon his release in 1865 he walked all the way from Maryland to his parent's home in Lincoln Co., North Carolina. He married Susan less than a year later.

Marcus and Susan started out their married life together farming but Marcus soon felt God's call to preach. Both his father and grandfather had been Methodist preachers. In preparation for the ministry he attended Rutherford College in Burke Co., NC and went on to preach in North Carolina Methodist churches for 28 years.

Marcus died on Jan. 15, 1892 when he was only 49 years of age. He and Susan had been married for 28 years and had twelve known children. The names of their children are listed in his Find a Grave Memorial.

Susan was just 48 when she died three years later on May 30, 1846. Both she and her husband Marcus died while living in Lexington, Davidson Co., NC and are buried there in the Lexington City Cemetery.
