William Marcus "Bill" Boyles was born in Feb. of 1887 in Eleazer, Troy, Montgomery Co., North Carolina. He was the son of Dr. Augustus Clingman "A.C." Boyles (1867-1936) and Anna Eliza "Annie" Coggin (1862-1914), the third of their four known children, all sons.

Bill's father, AC, was a medical doctor. He was the son of Methodist preacher Rev. Marcus Wrightman Boyles (1842-1892) and Susannah Alice "Susan" Wood (1846-1895). His GG-grandfather, John Boyles II (1770-1843), was also an "old-time" Methodist preacher.

Bill's mother, Annie, was the daughter of Burrell Titus Coggin Jr. (1836-1873) and Cirona Harris (1836-1873). Annie and her husband, AC, are buried in Maplewood Cemetery in Durham, North Carolina.

Bill, who never married, was a WWI US Army veteran. In 1935, he and 250+ other veterans, were working on a federal road project in the upper Florida Keys area when a massive hurricane hit the area on Labor Day. Bill and all of the other veterans, as well as a number of civilians (150+), lost their lives in what was then called "The Storm of the Century".

Many of the bodies recovered (some were lost to the ocean) were unidentifiable and consequently had to be cremated. Bill, who was just 38, was probably among them.

The Labor Day Hurricane of 1935 Memorial, located in Islamorada, Monroe Co., Florida, was created in 1937 to remember those who lost their lives in this terrible storm. The cremated remains of over 300 victims were placed inside.
