Death: Aug. 2, 1826
Sint Annaparochie
Het Bildt Municipality
Friesland, Netherlands

He was born on 12 September 1775 and baptized in the Dutch Reformed Church (DRC) on 22 October 1775 as Claas Jans in the country village Sint Annaparochie, seat of municipality Het Bildt, in the northwestern part of the Dutch northern province Friesland, son of Jan Claassen and Liskje Heins, who married in December 1757 (!) in Sint Annaparochie.

Klaas Jans married on 20 May 1804 in his birth and residence place Sint Annaparochie at the age of 28 years to the five years younger Tjitske Sybes, who was residing in Sint Annaparochie too, but was born in the country village Berlikum, in the adjacent municipality Menaldumadeel.

Klaas Jans used in March 1805 for the first time the surname Leep in a document, when his daughter Sijtske was baptized in the Dutch Reformed Church (DRC) of Sint Annaparochie. A possible explanation for the surname Leep might be that in the local Bildts language "leep" means peewit, lapwing, the name of a nice black and white meadow bird. In Frisian language it's called a ljip and in Dutch kievit. These birds arrive in Spring from Africa in the Netherlands. They have their nests in small dimples in meadow's ground.
Klaas Jans didn't confirm in 1811 officially at the townhall, as was ordered by Napoleon, that his surname was and would stay Leep.

Klaas and Tjitske had the following children in Sint Annaparochie, municipality Het Bildt, Friesland:
* Sijtske Klazes Leep, b. 7 March 1805, ~ 31 March 1805;
* Liskje Klazes Leep, b. 19 August 1809, ~ 10 September 1809;
* Jan Klazes Leep, b. 20 October 1812. He died on 3 May 1833 in a hospital in the city of Delft, Zuid-Holland, serving as a rifleman (fuselier) in the Dutch National Army;
* Baukje Klazes Leep, b. 27 February 1815;
* Gooikje Klazes Leep, b. 26 March 1818;
* Alle Klazes Leep, b. 8 September 1820, d. 2 October 1826 Sint Annaparochie;
* Anne Klazes Leep, b. 13 September 1822, d. 13 February 1909, Sint Annaparochie.

Anne is the only child that will continue with his son Klaas this Frisian Leep family (in the male "surname line"), which will die out in Friesland, but is "surviving" in the USA by quite some Leep-families.

Klaas is in 1811, 1812 and 1815 a laborer, residing in Sint Annaparochie, in 1811 in house number 239. He signed in 1812 the birthakte of his son Jan in a well readable handwriting with "Klaas Jans Leep". In 1815 he signed with "K:J: Leep". Klaas is in 1816, 1820 and 1822 a distiller's hand (?, brandersknegt, stokersknegt), signing with "Klaas Jans Leep" and in 1822 with "K:J: Leep" again.

Distiller's hand Klaas Jans Leep died in August 1826 in his birth and residence place Sint Annaparochie, house nr. 237, at the age of 50 years, widower of Tjitske Sybes de Haan, who died on 12 May 1826 in Sint Annaparochie, house nr. 239 at the age of 43 years. Klaas was then a workman and Tjitske a workwoman. Their orphant son Alle Klazes Leep died there in house nr. 276 on 2 October 1826 at the age of 6 years. Did they die of a contageous disease like malaria, typhus or cholera that broke out after the great storm flood on 3-5 February 1825 in Overijssel, Groningen and Friesland?
