Raphael Alexander was the first of five children born to John and Hannah (Bull) Alexander. The family owned and operated a chimney sweep business and was well off, employing workers in their business as well as in their home. One of the girls who worked in their home was Ada Tompkins, with whom Raphael had a relationship, which produced one son, Victor, born in 1905.

Raphael never married and continued in the chimney sweep business throughout his life. He is remembered by his nieces and nephews as being kind and musically talented. He gave his violin to his son, Victor, before Victor left for America in 1916. Raphael and his sister, Elizabeth (Maude), lived together on Cinderhill Street in Monmouth. Elizabeth died in 1944; Raphael died at the age of 77 of arteriosclerosis.
