Birth: Dec. 6, 1921
Death: Dec. 5, 2012

Mr. Robert "Peck" Mitchell Cox, 90, of 125 Maybelle St., died Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2012, at his residence. Robert received his nickname for his reply as a young boy when offered an apple and he said he didn't want just one, rather he wanted a peck.

He was born in Cartersville, Dec. 6, 1921, son of the late John Wesley Cox and Drucilla Griggs Cox.He was saved at age 17 in a Baptist church in Fairview (out from Atco) and was a longtime member of Tabernacle Baptist Church. Mr. Cox retired from Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company in Atco after 38 years of service. He was an Army veteran of WWII and fought in three major battles as a technical sergeant/cook in the European Theatre.

Robert served in the 104th Timberwolf Division with the 414th Infantry and was in the service for three years and 45 days.Service describes Peck's life service to his wife, family, country, employer, and fellow man. Even in his recent illness, he was concerned about Elma's health, and cared for her for many years as long as he was physically able. He served his family by painting, repairing, and supplying groceries and produce from his garden that he tended until age 85.

Serving as a faithful employee, he once remarked that when the mill was on seven days he didn't have anything to look forward to, i. e., being off.For many years following his retirement, Peck did work for family and friends, including widows and old folks in town. Often he kindly delivered their unusual and beautiful red-and-white camelia blooms to friends in the winter time.

Mr. Cox was preceded in death by his parents; his precious granddaughter-in-law Robin Robichau Kelly; his brothers John Willie "Bill," Thomas Richard, Raymond Isaac, Leonard Odell, Marvin Wesley, and Lamar Edward; and sisters, Virginia Cox Watson, Mabel Cox Howren, and Dorothy Cox McDonald.

Robert is survived by his wife of 70 years, Elma Abernathy Cox. Robert and Elma were married on Pearl Harbor Day, Dec. 7, 1941. Also surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Suzanne Cox Kelly and Mark V. Kelly II of Cartersville; two grandchildren, Chad Mitchell Kelly of Ellijay and Karli Kelly Ralston; one grandson-in-law, Roger Edward "Sage" Ralston of Dalton; and eight great-grandchildren, Hannah Suzanne Kelly, Nathan Mitchell Kelly, Jonas Mark Kelly and Karis Ann Kelly, Kathleen Annelle Ralston, Sage Buckner "Buck" Ralston, Julia Kelly Ralston and Isaac Cox "Ike" Ralston; and one brother, Hugh Wilson Cox of Stone Mountain. Funeral services and commital will be held Saturday, Dec. 8, at 3:30 p.m. in the Owen Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Don Hattaway, Rev. Mark Kelly and Rev. Chad Kelly officiating.
